Recruitment

At Thierry's, we specialise in 'home-grown' talent, giving people the head room and elbow room they need to develop. We give people the support, direction, tools and context to deliver great results and to grow their own confidence and competence, with a focus on education, training and development. We pride ourselves on combining a professional approach with a unique, non-corporate culture.

In practical terms, this means that everyone in Thierry's is professionally recruited, inducted into the business and then embarks on a development programme tailored to their particular needs, talents and ambitions. Team-working is crucial, with opportunities to belong to functional, project and multifunctional teams. Everyone has regular one to one meetings with their line manager, focused on their own development and building towards an annual review and target setting. Teams also take 'time out' to develop a more strategic, long-term view and to build the team.

The whole company has two 'Time Out' events a year and these days are a mixture of company-wide dialogue, training, problem-solving and celebration. In addition, there are monthly company meetings where there is an opportunity review performance, exhange views, present projects and get feedback and recognition. Thierry's Forum, consisting of a cross-section of people from the business is another way for people to get involved and make an impact, whether it be implementing company initiatives to help protect the environment, to support local charities or to improve the efficiency of various in-house systems. The Forum is open to all and representatives regularly take on projects as well as communicating and liaising with their colleagues. This is all an essential part of our approach.

In addition to running fully-funded internal WSET courses and examinations, Thierry's also offers a whole range of initiatives to ensure that employees are well equipped to carry out their roles, including financial and IT training, innovative sales training, lunch and learn workshops,  and negotiation skills training and development. Thierry's even has its own 'in-house' development programme, known as the Hero's Journey, on which selected employees are encouraged to learn new skills, as well as being challenged professionally and personally.

Much of the internal training and development is led from within and often created and delivered by our own people. Managing director, Ged Welch, is the driving force behind many of the company initiatives. His strong background in coaching and management training stands him in good stead. Thierry's also use external support and delivery to supplement, challenge and complement our own efforts.

The result of this focus means that although Thierry's regularly brings in new talent, retention rates are high and a substantial part of advancement and promotion is from within. The strongest example of this being Claire Sheppard, Marie Knight and Nikki Fletcher who over the past 8-10 years, having joined as account executives have each plotted a unique development route resulting in them joining the executive team in 2008.

Testimonials

If you don't believe us then listen to 2 members of the team:

"I joined the team seven months ago and Thierry's have invested in my personal development from day one. My colleagues share their vast and diverse knowledge of the wine industry readily and with passion. The executive team shares information with the wider team at our monthly company meetings and we are then encouraged to enter a frank discussion regarding any other 'hot' issues. I feel truly valued by Thierry's."

Jim Robinson, commercial executive

"I think the culture here at Thierry's is unique as we are all encouraged to speak up, to take ownership of projects, to move out of our own comfort zones at times, to challenge and be challenged, but always within a supportive, nurturing atmosphere. As a consequence of this, I feel empowered to make a difference and to really add value to the company. On a personal level, Thierry's has fully funded my WSET studies and I recently passed the Diploma with Merit which was a huge achievement for me."
